“Today, when Sotheby’s opens its exhibition of property to be auctioned from Katharine Hepburn’s estate, the public can see for the first time two startling, unflattering self-portraits. One shows Hepburn with Spencer Tracy, both in profile; he is rough-jawed and she has large squares all over her face to represent freckles. The drawing is playful, but she looks as if she has chickenpox. An even stranger portrait is a full-faced drawing of herself in which her mouth is made of blood-red gashes, her cheekbones are cadaverously sharp and her eyes so blazing green they look spooky — an image that reveals more of her cold, hard side than she ever did onscreen (maybe more than she intended)…”
